Gum disease (periodontitis) is the inflammation of the gums and bone which support teeth. This is caused by plaque (bacteria) and tartar (calcified plaque) that has not been cleaned from the tooth surface. It is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in Australia when it is undiagnosed and untreated. Periodontitis is often associated with family history of this condition.
Periodontitis is usually not painful and often patients are unaware that they have it. Bleeding gums, red and swollen gums, loose or mobile teeth and receding gums are some of the signs of periodontitis.
The oral health therapists at Peninsula Gateway Dental have a special interest in treating gum diseases. Treatment involves deep cleaning and an individualised oral hygiene program which our oral health therapists will develop for each patient.
The team at Peninsula Gateway Dental has successfully treated many patients from the Frankston region and the Mornington Peninsula. If you have wish to be checked for periodontitis please contact us and one of our team members will be happy to help.
