Why Are My Teeth So Sensitive?

Why Are My Teeth So Sensitive?

If you’ve ever felt a sudden zing of pain when sipping your morning coffee or biting into ice cream, you’re not alone. Tooth sensitivity is one of the most common dental concerns we see at Peninsula Gateway Dental in Frankston — and it’s usually a sign that your teeth need a little extra care.

Common Causes of Sensitivity

  • Worn enamel: Brushing using a hard toothbrush or a constant acidic diet can wear away your enamel, exposing the sensitive layer “dentine” underneath.
  • Gum recession: When gums pull back, they expose the roots of your teeth, which aren’t protected by enamel.
  • Tooth decay or cracked teeth: Cavities and cracks allow hot, cold, or sweet foods to reach the nerves inside your tooth
  • Whitening products: These can sometimes irritate sensitive areas especially if used incorrectly and not under the direction of a dental professional.

How to Treat Sensitive Teeth

  • Use a sensitive-tooth toothpaste: These formulas block pain signals from reaching the nerve. We have free samples at reception for your convenience.
  • Switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush: Gentle brushing protects your enamel and gums from receding. Plus, use the correct technique if your using an electric tooth brush.
  • Avoid acidic drinks: Limit soft drinks and citrus juices that can wear down enamel. (Also brushing after acid reflux is definitely a NO – as it will cause erosion)
  • See your dental professional: Persistent sensitivity can be a sign of decay, gum disease, or other issues that need professional care. Also, make sure you use credible whitening products recommended by a dental professional.

At Peninsula Gateway Dental, we’ll help identify the cause of your sensitivity and assess any underlying causes, aiming to be as conservative in our approach as possible — from desensitising agents to protective coatings or fillings if needed.

Don’t put up with the sting or hold back from enjoying your favorite foods.
